Tennis Center, a USTA Premier Facility, Will Start Renovations in July

Despite funding gap, nonprofit will renovate dated facility

The Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex is pleased to announce that it is under contract for Phase 1 of the Tennis Center renovation with Pillar Contracting, Inc. out of Oklahoma City, OK, beginning in July 2025. The initial Tennis Center renovation project scope, to elevate the dated Tennis Center to the same quality standard as the Complex’s newly built, state-of-the-art Pickleball Center, included a budget of approximately $2M+, that the nonprofit has been fundraising for through its Courting Love campaign, since 2023. Despite achieving only 75% of its fundraising goal, the nonprofit will proceed with the Tennis Center renovation project in July and continue to fundraise.

The Tennis Center will be open during construction, with only a partial impact on indoor operations during August and September months.

“We are humbled by the overwhelming support of the Steamboat Springs community to make renovating the Tennis Center a reality in 2025,” said Meg Tully, Executive Director, Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex. “While we still face a funding gap to complete the full renovation, we believe that investing in the project this year is a fiscal decision that will save dollars in the long run. We are very excited for the lifelong sport of tennis in Steamboat Springs, and we hope that our generous community will continue to donate towards this special community asset.

Needed improvements include replacing the exterior Tennis Center membrane and insulation that was installed in 2005, as well as replacing the lighting and painting the exterior.

Out of the $2M+ proposed budget, final bids resulted in a total project cost of $1.82M for Phase 1 after value-engineering options were explored. Approximately $1.38M has been raised for the project, including $500,000 committed by the City of Steamboat Springs and funds from a deferred maintenance account; however, a funding gap of $450K remains. Court resurfacing and Welcome Center improvements in Phase 2 will be delayed until full funding has been raised, although preliminary plans are in motion for that work as well.

“The Tennis Center has served the Steamboat Springs community for over 30 years and has been designated a Premier Facility by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) consecutively for three years, despite its dire need for repair,” said Jason Scicchitano, Director of Tennis, Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex. “Our ongoing Premier Facility designation is a testament to our reputation as a leading nonprofit public sports complex nationwide, and I am proud to call this facility home.”

Out of thousands of tennis facilities in the country, the USTA designates just 50 facilities nationwide with Premier status, a prestigious and coveted designation in the racquet sport industry awarded for the quality of its facilities, programs, coaching and customer service.
