SSPA’s 5th Annual Western Slope benefit tournament was, by any measure, a wonderful success!
Despite a construction-constrained field, the event grossed $10,000, and after expenses, will deliver $1,000 more to SSPA’s Youth Outreach program than last year’s tournament with a net $6,000.
Thanks go to our new Tournament Directors, Jayson Harris and Lexi Jensen. Despite a mid-Saturday deluge, all matches were contested in full and everything finished on time! And, nobody got a parking ticket.
Jeff Laxague, SSPA Chairman, is excited for the new possibilities that the tournament proceeds can provide, from Pickleball classes in even more schools, possible teacher training at the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center to the support that can be given to teachers for balls, nets, and paddles. Besides the student outreach program, SSPA also sponsors clinics and play for the Boys and Girls Club, as well as scholarships for summer camps.
Tournament Director Jayson Harris, stated “we had a wonderful tournament with a great turnout. The weather started out rough with heavy rains the prior night and during play, but we ended up having a beautiful day Sunday and some really great matches!” Co-tournament Director Lexi Jensen also confirmed that she, too, thinks this year’s Western Slope Tournament was an amazing success. “As this was the first tournament I’d ever run,” says Lexi, “I was very happy with how everything turned out. Especially Saturday, with two to three rain delays, we still were able to finish all the matches before dark. Sunday ran very smoothly, we had beautiful weather and amazing play! I was also impressed with the number of tournament sponsors that were gracious to donate items to the raffle. We had donations from Selkirk, Joola, Paddletec, Diadem, Vulcan, and Jigsaw Health. I’d also like to give a huge shoutout to Mai’s Pies & Cookies Too, for baking amazing cookies and desserts for the tournament on both days.”
